Geography Curriculum

Vision

Our vision is to inspire and nurture an understanding of the natural and man-made world.  Children will grow to understand and respect a range of localities and the environment.

 

Introduction

At Mesty Croft Academy the geography curriculum teaches an understanding of places and environments. Through their learning in geography, children will explore their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. Our intent is that the geography curriculum will enable the children to have first-hand experiences of the world, to learn how to draw and interpret maps, develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children will gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world, the importance of sustainable development and promote key British Values.

Geography lends itself to raising matters of citizenship and social welfare. Children study contrasting locations, the way people live and how environments are different and are changed for better or for worse.

 

Curriculum Organisation and Delivery

The Geography National Curriculum is delivered through a focus on three key areas: developing contextual knowledge, understanding physical and human processes and developing skills.  Over the stretch of these three areas, 7 central concepts are delved into, broadening the children’s vocabulary and allowing them to talk about Geography in a matured, knowledgeable, informed way.

Location

Where in the world – precisely by using grid locations or in relation to other places.

Region

Grouping together – county, country, continent, Spanish-Speaking World, Muslim countries

Pattern

Links between places and events.  Understanding that the same thing can happen in different places.

Interaction - Physical

A physical change can affect other locations / regions.  These events can be positive or negative

Learn about physical phenomenon such as volcanoes, earthquakes, plate tectonics, tides and rivers

Interaction - Human

Humans can affect the environment and vice versa

Pollution, mining, urbanisation, deforestation, ecology

Culture

Views on the environment are cultural, different views can exist within the same region.

Fieldwork skills

Surveys, questionnaires and statistics.

Map reading, compass reading, plotting courses

Creating maps, keys and scales

 

Geography is taught as a discrete subject from Year 1 to Year 6.  Lessons are timetabled once per week and can vary from 30 minutes to an hour in length.  The Geography curriculum is made up by the study of Human Geography, Physical Geography, Locations and Patterns and fieldwork.  All topics have been chosen to give children a rich and broad picture of the world. 

Our curriculum enables teachers to use a variety of teaching methods and learning styles within lessons. The curriculum is planned and taught taking into consideration the needs of all pupils based on their relative starting points. Geography teaching will be exciting and engaging with opportunities for children to participate in a range of real life experiences such as climbing a mountain and exploring a contrasting location to broaden their geographical knowledge and understanding. Children are provided with enquiry-based research learning opportunities and we encourage children to ask as well as answer geographical questions. We offer them the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as maps, statistics, graphs, pictures, and aerial photographs, and we enable them to use computing to enhance their learning. Children take part in role-play and discussions, and they present reports to the rest of the class. They engage in a wide variety of problem-solving learning. Wherever possible, we involve the children in ‘real’ geographical opportunities, e.g. research of a local environmental problem or use of the Internet to investigate a current issue.
