Music Curriculum

Vision

To build a base love in all children for a range of music, using this to inspire their own musical creation.

 

Introduction

At Mesty Croft Academy we believe that Music has a significant and valuable role to play in the curriculum, and in the overall ethos of the school. A love and understanding of music helps to contribute to children’s wellbeing, enjoyment of learning, and creativity. Alongside this, Music can complement and supports other areas of the curriculum; studying music is known to improve memory, concentration, co-ordination and confidence.

At Mesty Croft Academy we are establishing a capital of culture within our school, and Music has a significant part in this – music is encouraged to be played in lessons and assemblies, and to be discussed outside of Music lessons. We desire children to be confident appraisers of music, and use this foundation knowledge to build on their desire to learn instruments, read music, and create their own compositions.

 

Curriculum Organisation and Delivery

The Music National Curriculum is delivered through four main strands: Listening, Appraising, Composing and Performing. Over the stretch of these four areas, 8 central concepts are delved into, broadening the children’s vocabulary and allowing them to talk about Music in a matured, knowledgeable, informed way.

 

Central Concept

Description

Rhythm

The duration of sound – how long or short.

Beat – A pulse

Tempo – speed of the beat

Metre – organisation of strong and weak beats

Timbre

Tone colour / tone quality – how different instruments playing the same pitch, length and volume can be distinguished

Melody

The tune – an organised sequence of pitches

Harmony

The combination of two or more pitches

Form

The structure of music – verse, chorus, bridge, sections

Texture

Overall quality of a sound of a piece of music.  This is indicated by the number of voices – solo, accompanied, orchestral

Dynamics

The volume of a piece of music and changes in volume

Music appreciation

The ability of children to use the above terminology to describe their experience of music

 

The four main strands can be applied to a range of topics across the year, from exploring World music to learning how to play specific instruments. The scheme of work for each half term provides a balance between cultural understanding and thoughtful opinions of music, and the technicalities of playing and creating music, which ensures children progress throughout the year and onward in their school life.

 

Through Listening and Appraising, children explore a range of music they may not otherwise be exposed to, in order to develop their love music on a deep, thorough level. Contemporary music, World music and Classical music are all featured in the curriculum, tying into our school’s vision of a capital of culture. Children are encouraged to listen critically, and to notice features that they could use in their own compositions. Through this, they can form their own opinions on what they hear, using technical vocabulary to further explain their thoughts.

 

Children then progress into Composing and Performing towards the end of the scheme of work, once the foundation of understanding and appreciation of music has been formed. Children have a wide range of instruments to experiment with, and are able to improve their skills and understanding of reading and playing music as they advance throughout their school life.
